You can't afford to live here!

There’ve been some blogs on the rising cost of gas and how much it’s hitting our wallets – and justifiably so! But I am starting to realize just how far that increased cost of fuel has spread. I was comparing my bills to last year at this time last night. My grocery costs for two people have jumped 38% and, upon reflection, I find we’re not eating nearly as well as we did a year ago. We’ve all but eliminated the more expensive cuts of meats (steaks, roasts, etc.) Just guessing here, but if we had maintained our eating style, our costs would have soared well over 50% increase. OK, now there’s cost of heating the house! Fortunately, I use natural gas and not heating oil, but even that has risen over 28% since last year at this time. Almost anything one can buy in a store has risen due to the cost of transporting it to the stores! Clothes, booze, smokes, you name it. They’ve gone up – and far beyond any salary increases. Even beyond that…the cost of providing services by the town in which you live has gone up and we’re gonna feel that in our tax bills.

OK, now that’s just one side of the problem. The other and more deeply hidden cost of all this increase is just lurking out there waiting for us to get a handle on the fuel costs. Let’s say, for example, somehow we work out a deal with the oil cartels and get the price of fuel lowered by 25% on a long term basis. Do you think the grocery stores are going to lower their prices by 25% to match the savings they will realize? How about those who supply the grocers? Will they lower their prices to match the savings? Hell no! IF we are able to lower the cost of fuel, the only benefit we’ll see is being able to drive and heat our homes more cheaply. The rest of it is here to stay! And, while we’re on the subject…even if we get the oil cartels to lower their prices overnight by 25%, it’ll take six months for the price at the pump to go down to whatever level the greedy refiners and suppliers are willing to allow.

Just something else to think about in case you didn’t have enough on your plate a

Do you think the grocery stores are going to lower their prices by 25% to match the savings they will realize?

I know they won't... they historically never have...

Cost of living rose by 6% in 07... wages on the other hand rose at most 2% a 4% difference is huge especially considering the middle and bottom quintiles the lowest increases.. but the very tippy tippy top.. the rich (not 150k a year the rich people with more money than god) made 16% more in 07 than in 06..

You forgot to add the nice bit of inflation due to the federal reserves bailing out sub prime lenders as well as pumping money into the stock market...

Here is a good summary of right wing economics...

Now and only now that we are in the fourth quarter and down by a two touchdowns are people realizing what I've been screaming for years....

Corporate America is killing America!

Corporate Greed what an evil invention of the conservatives!
