1:17 am. Tina is awaken by the constant ringing of the telephone. Still half asleep, the soft green glow of the alarm clock, illuminates the night stand, showing her the way to the ringing phone. in a low and groggy voice, she answers the phone "Hello?" The unfamiliar, southern voice on the other end was deep, and spoke with authority." Good morning Mrs. Starpt. This is Sergeant Major Steven P. Green, of the United States Marine Corp." "I do apologize for calling you at this time of the morning." Tina now wide awake, and trembling with fear, springs to a seated position on the edge of the bed. "Oh my God." "Paul!" "Whats happen?" "Is he OK?" The Marine Sgnt. continues calmly. "Yes Ma'am he's just fine." "I am calling you, as favor to your husband." "All I can say at this time, is that Mr. Starpt, is just fine, and the group he was with has been moved to a secure area, and will be sent home to the United States as soon as arrangements came be made." "Once again Ma'am, I do apologize for calling you at such an early hour."
As much as Tina tried to believe that Paul was completely safe, she found it very difficult, considering all the news footage she has seen, and heard on the news. It seemed that's all they spoke of with their breaking news stories. She often thought of how she would embrace Paul, never letting go of him when he finally did come home. She even imagined briefly of shaking him, and even slapping his face for putting her through this. Even though she knew deep in her heart, just seeing Paul's face, or just getting a slight hint of his Cologne, was enough to make her melt, just as she did when she was a tall, awkward looking, skinny seventeen year old girl, who used to watch him from behind a half open locker door, in the high schools hallway between classes. Tina then though about the time Paul had been in Iraq, and this being one of the longest assignments he had been on, not to mention, the potential danger he faced there. Even though Paul, and Tina where not able to have children of their own, she found it impossible to imagine what it must be like, for anyone to have their child, serving in the military there.
11:am Looking out the large bay window, just past the wilting house plants that have been lately deprived of water, Tina watches the raindrops, as they ripple the surface water of the in ground pool below. Its been nearly a week, since she had received the phone call from the Sergeant Major, and still no word from Paul. Tina is soon snapped out of her late morning gaze, from the great room window, to the sound of the door bell. Making her way to the front door. Upon opening it, there stands before her a soldier in uniform. "Mornin, Mrs, Starpt?" "Yes, I'm Mrs, Startpt" The young Marine continues, "Ma'am, I'm Lance Corporal Lavine, of the United States Marine Corp." "I was sent here by Sergeant Major Green, to ask that you come with me, back to the base?" Tina quickly once again becoming alarmed. "Why?" "Whats wrong?" "Is there a problem?" "Sergeant Major Green, just told me to tell you, that Mr. Starpt is just fine." "The Sergeant Major just needs to talk to you in person."
