Several years ago I needed a liver biopsy. Getting stabbed in the liver three times is not my idea of a good time. To say I was terrified is an understatement. I felt like a wild animal cornered in a small operating room with two doctors and a nurse.

Suddenly I felt the nurse touch me on the hand and I felt more was like the devine hand of god had just given me the strength to walk through the fires of hell. It was not the fact that she held my hand was the way she held it. I could actually feel the compassion and love flowing in that touch. I had never met her before but in that one touch I felt that I had known her forever.

The biopsy was anything but pleasant but I somehow got through it mainly because of that nurse. Has anyone ever touched you that way? When I am at hospice, I am keenly aware of the importance of touch...sometimes it makes all the difference and speaks volumes without a word being spoken.

I guess I try to do the same thing with my humor...its a way for me to reach out and touch someone.

Borty, sounds like you were touched by an angel. Yes, I've had that feeling of comfort many times. A hug without words that said it all.

Great blog Yes, the power of the human touch is quite amazing - I always keep that in mind when I am helping my elderly residents.

When I visit the local VA hospital. I try to make a point of Touching every patient that I come in contact with. Sometime they hold out their hands to be held or shaken other times they just talk to you so I lay my hand on their shoulder.

We all need the feeling of contact with our human counterparts. and it works for wonders for both people.

Thanks for sharing

I guide the DR'S for those types of exams.... and I always hold hands... or just touch the patient...if no hand is available... so that they know someone still realises that they are not just a procedure.... and I know it will be ok

I had this conversation not too long ago with a friend about touching and what it can mean to others who don't have someone there. How it can ease their heart, or their fears.

It's amazing what a simple touch from the heart can do....

Borty, I'm sure you help a lot for those you touch with your kindness and compassion. As well as your humor.
