I just found out today that my dog Ben's kidneys might be failing. He is going to be at the animal hospital for a couple days, they are going to try to run a bunch of clean liquid through him to see if maybe his kidneys are at a point where they are savable, but hes probably dying, its probably just a matter of time.

Just a year ago he went through a couple months of treatment for nasal cancer and he beat that, just when I finally thought he might be ok now this. I'm so depressed. I feel really guilty that I didn't take him to the vet sooner.

At least he had a nice long life, his 14th birthday is coming up in May. I hope he has been happy and I wish I had done more for him and wish there was more I could do for him now.

It always hurts but don’t beat yourself up about it.
Just love him with the time you have left!

Wow, I hope that the pronosis turns out alright.

I have a Chocolate Lab that is 14 this year. I got him from the animal shelter when he was around a year old. He is my first baby.
I know what it is like to be very close to having to put your dog down. It is heartbreaking. I am quite sure your dog has appreciated all of his years with you. Don't feel guilty, he has lived way longer than most.

Well look at it this way.... If your dogs life was horrible and unhappy, he would of just gave up and let the cancer spread from his nose, and eventually would have passed away. Be he had something to live for, and wanted to be around you and whoever else had made his life happy and worth living for. The last thing he wants to see before he passes on is you miserable and feeling guilty.....

It is always hard to see a pet that you took care of and loved be sick or pass. They become like any person in your family. My cat just passed a few days ago and it has been pretty hard cause I loved that cat. But I will pray for your dog that everything is ok. Keep your heed up. He needs you to stay strong. You shouldn't blame yourself for anything.

Not much hurts me worse to hear of an animal suffering. I have two dogs of my own and they mean everything to me. I love them as though they were my own children, almost. You didn't mention what breed Ben is, but 14 years is quite a long time for any dog to live. My daughter had a cat she got when she was about 5 years old...he died when she was 23. That cat lived 18 years..Belker (like from Hill Street Blues?) ...and she couldn't take being around when he died, so I was with him and he died in my arms..purring the whole time.

I have loved animals since I was born, pretty much. As a toddler, I used to play out in the backyard and butterflies would land on my finger and I'd talk to them for hours. LOL.

If it turns out Ben doesn't pull through this, then thank God you had Ben as a companion for so long..and more than that, that Ben had someone who really cared for him and loved him very much. Millions of animals have no one.

You'll never be able to replace Ben, just like you can't replace any pet, but, if you lose Ben and you can bring yourself to do it, there is another puppy out there at the pound or a shelter somewhere who is facing "euthanasia" who would love to have you for a "papa."

People, if you have room in your lives and in your hearts to adopt a pet and give it a loving home, please do.

Also, as always, please SPAY OR NEUTER your pets to help control the overwhelming pet population.

Hey man, don't kick yourself. We have a saying (work) "De-Nile is not a river" but that's goes for 2 leged patients. Dogs just show love & don't tell you they are in pain until it shows in another way. Hang in there. funny how we become so attached. I know mine is who I rely on more than anyone these days.

Ice man I really feel for you my "Jake " is 15 and I know his day is coming I've had him for 10 years and he's my family. Just make Ben as happy as you can and be glad you got his unquestioned love and affection for as long as you have .

Got him home with me today, but the vet thinks his kidneys are completely shut down and is suggesting to put him to sleep. I'm not sure if I am strong enough to do it...

I was wondering how things were going with Ben. I see with your last post.

If the vet suggestes it, then you owe it to Ben. He deserves to go peacefully instead of suffering.

Oh Iceberg sorry to hear about Ben,,,,,,give him some extra love and attention (which I'm sure you already do) for a bit, then you should allow him to go in peace with as little suffering as possible!! Take care and good luck,

Zena
