So, I was checking in because of my pathetic narcissistic tendencies, reading the very sweet emails from people asking me to stick around, (smooches!) and I just couldn't resist saying something in relation to what is often referred to as the oldest profession known to mankind.
First, I'm a freak. In bed, I like what I like and no explanation is necessary. There are those who out-freak me by a mile. Much of what they like, does not turn me on and certainly isn't something that I want to experience. That being said, what transpires between two consenting adults and isn't coercive, abusive or violent is none of my business. Yes, this includes paying for sex. For some it is a harmless game between two adults and the money means nothing AND then for some it’s a game where money is exchanged for sex and it is a business transaction. The difference between the two is what we make it “mean”.
Second, I have worked with people who have participated in prostitution. There are many levels and many types of prostitutes. During my time with these women AND men, I was surprised that my preconceived idea of what "types" of people "they" were couldn't have been farther from the truth. I found them to be people of all shapes, sizes, and intelligence. Many are people you probably know, go to work with and probably go to college with. My point? What I thought I knew couldn't be balanced on the tip of a pin.
Thirdly, it is not my place to judge these people. One former street prostitute put it very plainly to me: "we have all paid or have been paid for sex...it may not be money, but you have had sex with someone when there was a cost associated with it."
Fourth, what we fail to realize is that the human psyche will drive us to do "crazy" things for love. Now you might think that's corny, but when you are home in bed all snuggled up and feeling safe ask yourself, "have you slept with someone you didn't want to just because you wanted to be close to someone or maybe because you wanted something or maybe because they wanted something from you?"
Finally, the human condition is tremendously complicated. We get ourselves into all sorts of predicaments and we are driven to survive. Some of us are good at handling money and expenses, we've made good choices and our lives are going pretty well. Others were born into a hell that no one could imagine. The situation is complicated and perhaps they've chosen unpopular solutions. Here's the thing...life is a crap shoot. It involves luck. We don't like to believe it because it would mean that perhaps we might get unlucky, and then we might be driven to do some unpopular things as well.
Karl Jung had his theory of “the disowned self”. In short what it said is this: That which we hate in others is the part of us that we hate the most in ourselves.
Ok…swing away if you feel the need.
