The chat room is a wonderful invention. People from all over the world can meet and exchange ideas in ways that were unheard of when my parents were my age. I for one couldn't be happier that the chat room exists, its how I met Mel afterall, but there are some always painfully obvious downsides to this forum of conversing. What downside am I talking about? Not being able to actually see the person you're talking to? No.

The fact of the matter is many people feel they have a permission slip to act however they want in a chat room. They feel that there are no consequences to their actions. They can say, emote and act however they want and they feel that there is nothing wrong if they offend someone. Those of us who treat people right on this site are all to familair with this problem.

What it comes down to is some people will act differently when face to face than they will in a chat room. Different how? By different I mean that they loose all sense of respect for a person. Now this raises the concept that perhaps the people were actually raises with no respect, something I am aware that apparently happens but is so foreign to me that I can't understand why people don't think about the consequences of their actions before they do them. The truth is some people don't respect others and will almost seem to go out of their way to be disrespectful. But no matter what when you meet someone face to face particularly in a group setting you have the threat of physical hurt, so these people with a lack of respect actually have some incentive to give enough respect to keep from being smacked silly. Take that away and there they go, welcome to the chat room. Thank god for the block button.

A little bit of common respect and courtesy can go a long way..Regardless of who you are or where you're at.. Online or off.
Some people just tend to forget that...Some don't care to begin with..

I stay out of the chat rooms..for various reasons.

The same thing happens in the blogs and forums...people think they can say whatever they want however they want and then scream freedom of speech when they get blocked or people tell them to stfu.

YAY For the block button. Pity though copy and paste was removed from the chat room, a few using chat would be banned, if it was still available.

Have a Green Thingy liz.

I agree whole heartedly.I can't stand cowards who act tough then hide behind a veil, whateer it may be. If you wouldn't say something to someone's face, you shouldn't say it at all. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing cowardly about not wanting to fight, but when you do things that might get you hurt and then hide behind something, well that's just being a punk. The best way to look at this is that people with this mentality most likely already get smacked around. I know they do where I come from.

Didn't you know you can virtually smack someone? Makes me feel better, anyway...

Okay, I'll be nice :)

Yes, it seems to be a fact of online social networking that people can tend to be "outside of themselves". Me, I am here who I am "in real life"...which means, this IS real life to me so I treat people here the way I would if we were all in one big building. Good thing I'm generally a nice, friendly person!

I’m still soooo new to chat.
But I’ve had fun the few times I’ve gone there.
If someone says something I don’t like I can ignore it or blast them…I tend to ignore things and they go away.
