Yes, it is a sad day in music, and we lost another great musician...
He had battled cancer since he was a baby, which is what not only took his life, but also took his eyesight at the age of one.
I heard of his death on the radio, on my way home from work this morning. And it brought me back to August 1990, when Stevie Ray Vaughan had lost his life in Alpine Valley, in East Troy WI.
I was at SRV's last concert, and while I was driving home the next morning...I had heard about Stevie Ray Vaughan's horrible helicopter crash in which he had lost his life.
And the reason I thought of SRV as soon as I heard about Jeff Healey, has to do with the fact that it was Stevie Ray Vaughan who had discovered Jeff Healey.
Jeff Healey was a great blues-rock artist, but his true love was jazz, the genre that dominated his three most recent albums.
"It's Tight Like That [live]," "Adventures in Jazzland," and "Among Friends." He also has an album due for release in April, which brings him back to the blues... "Mess of Blues"
Which I'll buy as soon as it comes out, as I have all his other albums...including the Roadhouse soundtrack! And yes, I also have the movie on DVD. I was also fortunate enough to have seen him in concert!
As the tribute song written for Stevie Ray Vaughan says...
Heaven done called another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called another blues-stringer back home
