The power of prayer and positive thinking...

Norman Vincent Peale wrote a book called "The Power of Positive Thinking". I've never read the whole book; it's rather dry...but the title has always caught my eye for the reason that positive thinking does bring positive results.

The question was asked if someone asks you to pray for someone...do you? To answer that...yes, I do. Do I go to church and light a candle...well no. But I do say a prayer for that person...whomever or where ever they may be.

I stopped going to church for a variety of reasons...but mostly because as I got older, I started seeing alot of contradiction and downright hypocrisy in most organized religion. I see every day churches spending millions of dollars to make their places of worship bigger and prettier...yes, millions! I see preachers driving up in Cadillacs and big SUV's and asking for more money from their congregates. I hear about priests and ministers telling people that sex outside of marriage is a sin...then molesting children. And I see signs outside of churches saying "All are Welcome" but turning away the gay couple or the guy with a mowhawk and nose piercing or tattoos. And I see people who call themselves Christian picking and choosing what they will believe from the bible...and ignoring other things because it doesn't fit their lifestyle today.

However, I do pray. And I've seen the power of prayer...or positive thoughts...work first hand. And I believe it can work...whether for a person, a community or for the entire population.

Recently I asked everyone on all the internet groups I belong to, to pray for a person I work with. This person was literally at death's door...had actually died at one point. He wasn't expected to live...and if he did was expected to never be able to work again and need constant care the rest of his life.
He did live...and is back to work less than a month later. He is still fighting infection, and will suffer from the after effects for months or even years to come. But the power of prayer and positive thoughts saved him when his doctors had given up hope.

Positive thoughts and prayers can and do change lives. Yes...in most situations these things are accompanied by actions...they have to be. The point is...it starts with a thought...an idea. That idea is put into action by the process of people wanting to make themselves, their community or their world, better.

To ask God to make you a better person generally doesn't get results until you say to yourself "I want to be a better person" enough times that eventually you start doing things that make you a better person. Positive thinking for positive results.

BTW...before any Christians get up in arms I'm not bashing Christians. I'm stating my opinions based on things I've seen...all over the world. Not all Christians are like this...but a good majority of the ones I've met are.

try waiting tables on the Sunday church crowd! They are rude, want extra items without paying and then leave a $2 tip for a family of 4 (and some places children eat free) before anyone bashes me I've been waiting tables for 30 yrs (31 in May) so yeah I know what I'm talking about

I agree with what you say, sunny! I think the hypocrisy is what kills me the most. But I also agree with what goes around, comes around. If you dish, be prepared to take it!
I worked with a minister once who had an affair. He treated his wife terribly, treated his mistress terribly, basically everyone he came into contact with was treated like crap.
Now guess what? He's had heart bypass surgery, several strokes and now needs a hip replacement.
Guess he shoulda been a bit more careful in what he dished out.......

Oh yeah Lisa I know about those Sunday morning breakfast crowd.. the Witnesses are the worst.. they sit in a huge group eat just about everything there is.. drink inordinant amounts of coffee and then don't even bother to tip!

Right has nothing to do with this blog right?

Prayer and making the change within .. that's the best medicine of all.

Amen and can I get a witness? Yep I most definitely believe in the power of having lots of people everywhere thinking good thoughts, saying prayers what have you. I've relied on many of you in the past year for these thoughts, I feel it's what helped my mom come through her surgery, my dad through quad bypass, and me well I'm cancer free now. You betcha I believe in it, and I have no problems whatsoever taking a moment of my time to say a quick word for a total stranger if someone I know or care about asks me too. I'm not a devout religious person as I consider myself a non practicing Southern Baptist, much for the same reasons you listed and a few more of my own personal ones, but I'm still very spiritual and have my own belief system in place. Good blog Sunny, shinygreen fat free thingy to ya!

Now Now...nothing wrong with drinking inordinant amounts of coffee Nacho to lol
Christian bashing..what...they need to stop doing the bashing! I worrked for
a hardcore christian, oneday his wife took all my cds and radio cause she said it wasn't christian...well after I quit and packed my stuff...I informed my boss and his wife that it was Stryper...LMAO...yep christian rock just so I could hear some tunes...

I do pray in my own way...it is not a direct request for anything for anyone..it is more that I send out the energy of Love and Light for any that need to receive it...even those that for whatever reason have chosen to turn on me...I will however
make exceptions and make a separate prayer if someone is in serious need of one,or 2,or...........

There's a great book called "if life is a game, these are the rules" by Cherie Carter-Scott..excellent read

So with all that...Love and Light to all the AMDer's

Good blog Sundance, I firmly believe that God will open doors when we ask Him to, but we have to first reach out and try turning the door knob ourselves.

I rarely talk about religion...as I simply do not believe. And you put it extremely well as to why I do not...

I'm not an Atheist, I don't consider myself a Spiritualist, nor do I think of myself as an Agnostic...Not really sure what one would call me?

I've often told people I'm a spiritualist, I've also told people I'm an agnostic. I've even told some I'm an atheist...for the fact I'm not really sure what I am...

Anyhow, I don't believe in God, religion, the church, heaven, hell, or the devil. However, I do believe there is something or someone that of which is responsible for all of us, as well as everything around us...But I refuse to place a label on him, her, or it ....as being God...

As for prayer, I also do not believe in prayer...I do however believe in positive thinking...therefore rather than saying a prayer for another, I simply keep them in my thoughts.
