I posted a video of this song in the video section of AMD, and it seems this section of AMD is pretty much ignored. Except by a small handful of us, so I want to post it as a blog as well...
I've always loved this song, and I think it might be his best ever...outside of his song "Turn the Page."
According to Timothy White, a writer for Rolling Stone, "'Against the Wind' is about trying to move ahead, keeping your sanity and integrity at the same time."
And according to Bob, during an interview on 100 FM The Pike...he said that "Against the Wind" came about from his days as a high-school cross country runner.
To me, it's a song about a lost love...and everytime I hear this song...I think of my lost love...Heather.
Guess this is simply one of those songs, that can mean different things, to different people.
I also think this song has the greatest line ever written in a song...
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then I'm just wondering, for those of you who have heard this song...what does it mean to you?
I'd also like to know what you think is the greatest line or lyric ever written in a song...
Against the Wind
It seems like yesterday But it was long ago Janey was lovely she was the queen of my nights There in the darkness with the radio playing low And the secrets that we shared The mountains that we moved Caught like a wildfire out of control 'Til there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove And I remember what she said to me How she swore that it never would end I remember how she held me oh so tight Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then
Against the wind We were runnin' against the wind We were young and strong, we were runnin' Against the wind
The years rolled slowly past And I found myself alone Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends I found myself further and further from my home And I guess I lost my way There were oh so many roads I was living to run and running to live Never worryied about paying or even how much I owed Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time Breaking all of the rules that would bend I began to find myself searching Searching for shelter again and again
Against the wind A little something against the wind I found myself seeking shelter sgainst the wind
Well those drifter's days are past me now I've got so much more to think about Deadlines and commitments What to leave in, what to leave out
Against the wind I'm still runnin' against the wind I'm older now but still runnin' against the wind Well I'm older now and still runnin' Against the wind Against the wind Against the wind
Still runnin' I'm still runnin' against the wind I'm still runnin' I'm still runnin' against the wind Still runnin' Runnin' against the wind Runnin' against the wind See the young man run Watch the young man run Watch the young man runnin' He'll be runnin' against the wind Let the cowboys ride Let the cowboys ride They'll be ridin' against the wind Against the wind ...

I don't go into videos because I unfortunately have dial-up and it takes me about 2 minutes to get about 20 seconds of video to play. And then it's bad. Even my favorite songs aren't worth that.
Although just about anything Seger has ever done would fall into my favorites somewhere.
As for the line..good line..not sure best ever. But I sure think it lots of times. To me, there are too many really good lines to pick a very best ever in a song.

It is my life. A stuggle that is constant and draining. It is like every time you move forward there is something pushing you back. Every success is followed by failures to overcome. I think the person who said it was like trying to move ahead with your integrity intact was pretty dead on to how this song relates to me.
By the way Turn the page is the best song Bob ever did. Great song to listen to when your driving a truck......

I checked it out earlier today, thinking that it may be a concert or ven a video, but it was just the song with a picture of a horse I think it was. I love this song, and Bob Segar kicks ass. I was just hoping to see a video with it.

Or ,...Led Zeppelin Livin Lovin Maid..... "With a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat, Livin', lovin', she's just a woman. Missus cool rides out in her aged Cadillac. Livin', lovin', she's just a woman"

My first memories are of The Stones' "Satisfaction," Donovan's "Catch the Wind," and of course Seger's "Against the Wind." I'll let you know what the greatest lyric is after I secure the copyright for one of my new songs, "Two Nights Stand." I'm joking. Perhaps the greatest line is "I have become comfortably numb..." 'though, Paul Simon has written some great ones, such as "And sometimes even music Cannot substitute for tears..."
