I recently came across an article that stated that researchers had identified about 400 genes that make some people more prone to drug addiction. The article states:

Chinese scientists have identified about 400 genes that seem to make some people more easily addicted to drugs opening the way for better treatments for controling drug addictions.Experts believe that genetic factors are responsible for 60% of a persons vulnerability to drug addictions.Enviromental factors account for the remaining 40%.The research focused on 4 addictive substances Opiate, Alcohol, Cocaine, and Nicotine and mapped out five main routes ( molecular pathways ) that lead to addiction, the researchers wrote this in the journal PLoS Computational Biology.Determining pathways is important in the study of complex diseases as they narrow down the genes and protiens involved. In diseases such as Cancer pathways help doctors make more accurate diagnoses and predictions of the course of the disease. In drug addiction, the researchers stated " these common pathways may underlie the shared rewarding and response mechanisms and may be targets for effective treatments for a wide range of addictive disorders ".The researchers trawled through more than 1,000 peer-reviewed medical publications that linked genes and chromosome regions to drug addiction over the past 30 years and assembled a list of 1,500 addiction-related genes. Some of the genes turned up more frequently than than did others in the pathways and scientists have narrowed the list to 396.

Hopefully this and further research will lead to highly efective , and safe treatments that will allow those who are addicted to drugs to safely and effectively break their dependence on drugs for good, as well as letting doctors identify those who at risk for becoming dependent on drugs to never begin to use them, by identyfying them and treating them before they ever begin to use them, thus preventing or curing drug dependency completely saving many lives and so much pain, grief suffering and the breakup of so many relationships and or families. So no one has to lose a loved one, family member to drug abuse ever again.Peace Thanks for taking the time to read this.Drug addiction is a horrible viscious cycle that is so very difficult to break, sometimes it is all but impossible for some to escape the madness, it hurts so many , people lose so much due to it, their lives, family, loved ones, friends, jobs, homes sometimes everything.Resorting to crime in some cases, sometimes even selling themselves, willing to do anything for that next high, in an effort to escape reality, life, sadness, pain, suffering, hurt, lonliness, feeling like no one loves them or cares, like they are alone in the world, no one understands, so they turn to drugs to numb them, to ease their pain , let them forget, it is tragic.Always remember that as long as we have the precious gift of life, we have hope, and anything is possible we can achieve most anything we et our minds to if we just have faith and believe in ourselves others will to, and we can change ourselves and our lives for the better, if we can envsion it we can acheive it.Peace, love , health, happiness and all the blessings of life to everyone.

Problems with treatment. One suggested way to use this data is rna manipulation. Its a simple enough process of turning on and off genes... which could have consequences beyond our imagination. You see everything about our current genetic makup has evolved this way for a reason. Becouse it could. Our ancestors survived and passed on theyre genetic recipe, and now they want to play with said recipe. Very scary stuff.

Plus the possiblity of them gathering such information about our dna is rather frightning. Can you imagine an employer using this information during the hiring practice? I can.

Brave new world eh.

Just playing devils advocate.

Great blog! I know how painful my path to sobriety was and I know how very low I had to sink until sobriety was the only door on the street that was open to me. It literally was get sober or die. I was sick of living, but I was more scared of death, so I went through that door. It's been over 20 years since I began that path and, to be totally honest, there are days when it is still painful. that, alone, is why I say honestly that I am an alcoholic IN recovery...

IF there is a possibility of a medical treatment that would help in a cure of this horrible disease, then I am all for it. Time, I suppose, will tell how this discovery will go, but I need to tell you I am watching it with a high level of interest. I have lost too many good friends to drugs of one sort or another, including alcohol.

Thank you for this fine blog.........I agree with Scotty........alcohol played a large part in my life........and getting into recovery was an act of a desperate person who knew that I had two choices..........die or die.........that was it.........I do believe that alcoholism is genetic because i believe I inherited the disease.......not a learned behavior as my parents were not drinkers.......but my grandfather died of alcoholism when i was 7.........I had never met him.........I believe I was born an alcoholic.........I just didnt add the alcohol until I 14 yrs old. I to have seen many of my friends die with this horrifying disease...........I sat and held a 14 yr old girl in a group home waiting for the ambulance to come.......dying in my arms after cutting her own wrists...........because of alcoholism........If there is only one chance that there would be a cure for it........If they only found the way to save one person.........it is well worth the research. I like Scotty, will never be a recovered alcoholic, I will be in recovery, by the grace of God, for the rest of my life.

I whole-heartedly agree with Dominus.

You see everything about our current genetic makup has evolved this way for a reason.
Not as simple as that. From a purely Darwinistic standpoint what we have is a product of what didn't kill our ancestors. Things that had no noticeable effect on thier ablitiy to breed and not to die, got passed down to us as well. We also have leftovers (like the appendix) that helped our ancestors but don't help us. However...
which could have consequences beyond our imagination.
That's still true.
Meanwhile...
Plus the possiblity of them gathering such information about our dna is rather frightning.
It is, we must be very careful, even without genetics coming into play, to safe gaurd our right to privacy. But the Pandora's box has already been opened. And the potential benefit's (IMO) outweigh the consequences (sp?). We have fire at our disposal, and we don't burn people nearly as much as we used to. So far, we've managed to not have a nuclear war. Maybe we could be civil and just in our use of genetics as well. Even right now, we do have the ability to tell alot about a person from their genes. So far, employers don't swab your cheek at an interview. To me it becomes a matter of 'guns don't kill people, people do' type arguement. The tech. can make life better, it can make people suffer less. Why purposely not develop it. Just cause Audrous Huxley was a good writer? We should use his book as a cautionary tale as we step forward as a species.
