Earlier this afternoon I was in the kitchen doing dishes and trying to putting some Christmas stuff away. I wanted orange spice ice tea, so I put the water and tea bags on. I start with hot water in a one quart pan and bring it to a boil for about 3-4 minutes then let it cool before adding it to ice water.
There was a knock at the door and I went to answer it. I'm so tired of the political campaigns already...
I've not had much energy lately due to having walking pneumonia so since I was already in the living room I thought I would sit down for just a minute. I had taken my allergy meds a little earlier and I suddenly got so tired I laid down on the couch. I never do this without my pillows, but I just couldn't stay awake. I abruptley woke up about an hour and twenty minutes later to an awful burning smell..and smoke. .I ran in the kitchen to find the tea bags were almost completely disintegrated in the pan and smoke was everywhere. The inside bottom of the pan was completely burned black. I used enough common sense to turn the burner off and grab a towel before grabbing hold of the handle of the pan. My curtains are about 18 inches from that burner. I never realized they were actually that close til today as I was opening the window.....
I checked my smoke alarm to see why it hadn't went off. Lord knows if I happen to spill something in the oven it goes off..... Then it hit me, I had spilled something in the oven and taken the batteries out of both of them downstairs intending to put them back later....They're still in the drawer.....
I can not explain how lucky I feel right now........I have 18/10 stainless steel pans and I honestly think if I had been using a different pan, of lesser quality, I wouldn't be so lucky. I don't think they could have taken that heat for that long.....
Yea, the batteries are back in the smoke alarms....and will stay there until time to change them..

All my smoke alarms are the hard-wired type...with a battery as backup (changed religiously every 90 days)....Yes, they can be a pain when you screw up...but they help keep me safe...BTW, next time one goes off.....blow on it with a hair dryer, rather than removing the power source....

Some of the newer ones have a bypass button. If you are right there, hit the button and it will shut off for a couple minutes and then re-set. which gives you time to blow the smoke away. Makes a good dinner timer
