What I have learnt through personal experience is that the government wont even help pay for his funeral. Oh, they'll give him a 21 gun salute and hand his wife a folded flag. He already has a flag flying on the pole in his front yard. And I guess he heard enough gunfire in the war. I personally know for myself that he heard enough gunfire in his nightmares.

Yes, he did recieve a check every month. But he also worked under the table to make ends meet right up until the end. My dad was never good at managing money. But still, he only has a doublewide sitting on 7 acres of land and 4 or 5 USED vehicles. The vehicles will have to be sold to pay for his burial plot. We are still struggling with how to come up with the $8,000 for his funeral.

My great granny owned pretty much all of Fork Mountain. In just a couple of generations it is down to the 7 acres my dad came home and struggled all his life to keep. There are 2 morgages on the land and doublewide. For the life of me I cant even figure out the remotest possibility of us even being able to keep the land.

My dad was a war hero who gave his life for this country. And yes, I said his life. He came back from Vietnam a totally different person. A changed man. I only know this from talking to family and what few friends he had.

What I also know is, that all of his health problems came from that war. His battle wounds, the agent orange, the infection from a metal plate in his head, his shredded organs, the stress from the war, his conscience, and his discouragement from the reception he recieved upon arriving home. At only 58 years old, he should have been only a little over half-way through his life. Considering my great granny lived to be 104.

But yet, the government will not even help with his burial or funeral costs! So FORGET the government! I no longer have any use for it. The real shame of it is, it's the best government we have in the world today. That really scares me. And with what I've lived through, very few things in this world can scare me.

My dad was the strongest man I have ever known. And the only man I have ever respected on this earth.

I'm not saying that because he was my dad. He was hardly ever around when I was growing up. For many years I hated him. Sometimes growing up I even wished he was dead. But through it all, like it or not, I loved and respected him. We never got to work our differences out but I thank God that I at least got to tell him those two things before he died.

My dad was always very hard on me but I have finally come to believe it was because he loved me so much. We are two of a kind and I followed right along in his footsteps which I see now is enough to drive a poor parent crazy.

His parents never taught him how to show his love so I cant blame him for not being able to show me or for not being able to teach me how to show mine. But he was able to do a better job of it than they did. I just hope that I too can do even better by my children.I finally figured this out and am able to forgive him and release 39 years worth of resentments. All things considered, I wouldnt have traded him for any dad in the world.

Oh how I wish I could have told him this too!

The world lost a GREAT man this Saturday!

I just miss my DAD!
