I heard that they are true storys but what they do is make it out to be worse then what it is and they more or less make the guest angry to make it more appealing to people who watch... Nope, it's all scripted. The story line is written by writers, the people on the show merely adlib much of the dialogue. I've spoken to one of the producers on the show when a woman I know appeared on the show back in 1999, they provided her with airfare, all inclusive meals and hotel stay, and paid her 200.00 per day. She did it merely as a joke and so she could say later that she had done it.
