What is Love?

My reason for asking this question is simply this: Most people spend their entire lives trying to figure out what love truly is, and in many cases end up with potentially incorrect assumptions based on the opinions of others. Bare in mind that what I share is also only an opinion. The word love has been so badly misused through countless ideologies, religions, and of course by the many facets of the media, (TV, radio, internet), that it's a miracle that anyone could ever come up with any real understanding of what the true meaning of love is. I'm not even sure if what I think is true, is necessarily accurate.

What I believe is true about love is this: Love is an action, not an emotion. It's the actions that we take toward one another that cause us to have emotional responses that we associate with the word love, thereby missing it's true essence. Words are only signposts that point us in the direction of a certain emotional response that we identify with, and the word love is no different in that respect.

A great spiritual/philosophical teacher spoke these words that opened my eyes in a way that I never thought possible. (ask me via email and I'll share with you who I'm talking about) "So how can anyone say they're "in love" with a specific person? For example: They're only in love with the anticipation of the emotions they're addicted to, because the same person could fall out of favor the next week by not complying. My goodness doesn't that change the landscape of our emotional outlook on personal needs and identities?"

Looking forward to hearing what kind of response this brings about

So if I get what your saying that Love is nothing more than a Pavlovian response to stimuli?

Anthropologists would beg to differ.... Love is an inborn part of our nature. A mother bonds with her baby: love... the family bonding: love.. the man and woman bond for the sake of the tribes contination into a pairing: marriage; love. there are many ways to look at love. philosopically. sociologically. etc...

Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection or profound oneness. Depending on context, love can have a wide variety of intended meanings.

# a strong positive emotion of regard and affection; "his love for his work"; "children need a lot of love"
# any object of warm affection or devotion; "the theater was her first love"; "he has a passion for cock fighting";
# have a great affection or liking for; "I love French food"; "She loves her boss and works hard for him"
# beloved: a beloved person; used as terms of endearment
# a deep feeling of sexual desire and attraction; "their love left them indifferent to their surroundings"; "she was his first love"
# get pleasure from; "I love cooking"
# a score of zero in tennis or squash; "it was 40 love"
# be enamored or in love with; "She loves her husband deeply"
# roll in the hay: have sexual intercourse with; "This student sleeps with everyone in her dorm"; "Adam knew Eve"; "Were you ever intimate with this man?"
# sexual love: sexual activities (often including sexual intercourse) between two people; "his lovemaking disgusted her"; "he hadn't had any love in months"; "he has a very complicated love life"

Some related phrases: courtly love i love you love songs love song first love one love my love love story all you need is love somebody to love

By the way, I got this out of google.

Everyone has there own definition of love, its to bad some people don't look at it from the heart and soul instead of philosopically. sociologically.

Love, to me...he's a great Daddy, got a beautiful heart, handsome as all get out, kind, generous, makes me laugh, loves to match wits with me. The mutual respect is a MUST.

We are by no means, perfect. We have occasional bad moments and days; everyone does. What it boils down to is this: Through it all, he's the man who I KNOW I want to be with - even when I'm fit to be tied! - and he melts me...the way he looks at me.

There's nobody else I'd choose.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Love is a process and and Action. One can say they love the other person, however if the same person is hiting the person they said I love you to there really isn't any love

Love can be a lot of different things and emotions. But I believe there is a big difference between love and being in love.

I completley disagree with your assertions love is pure emotions and true love love varies from individual and situation. Like a motherws love it is not influenced by personal needs but selflessness.
