Well first I look at the horse's hoofs, check for founder marks and cracks, check out his pads and frogs for any injuries or signs of disability. Feel the whithers and back bone, check for sway back, a sign the horse was broke too young. Then pull open his mouth and check for the amount of grind down on the teeth, will tell the horse's true age. Look into the eyes to see if they are clear or fogged and can focus. Check out the mane, tail and coat for a healthy shine or if it's dull and drab can mean it's been ill. The list goes on, but you get the general idea.
