This is a poem that I wrote for a talent contest while I was in rehab. I wrote this on August 23, 2006.
Recover and Discover
This is a story of recovery;
It is also a tale of discovery.
I'd say that most of us when we first get here,
Are full of grief, anger, tears and fear.
When we had lost all we knew and held dear,
We finally figured out we couldnt handle anymore drugs, liquor or beer.
As we began to detox and feel worse and worse,
Some felt the need to cuss the poor ole nurse.
We wanted our meds and we wanted our beds,
Instead they fed us and waited for the drug-haze to lift from our heads.
We start our rehab with heads bent in shame,
As we slowly figure out it's not really a game.
It's not everyone else's fault we realize,
So we have to run round the center and apologize.
As the days go by and we learn more and more,
We start to believe we may have finally walked through the right door.
All those years we thought we were alone,
Alone with our tears.
For only another addict could understand our attitudes, behaviors and fears.
As we talked to our consolers, friends and peers,
We were so grateful for their sholders to cry on and their listening ears.
Going to group, class and meetings; sharing hugs, smiles and greetings,
We come to realize how many of our thoughts were self-defeating.
As we learned to open up and share our feelings,
All the love in these rooms sent our hearts and minds reeling.
So we get on the phone and write our letter,
Hoping our family will know we are finally getting better.
Too many years of using;
Too many years of abusing.
28 days to discover
And a lifetime to learn that we CAN recover.
So leave behind your active addiction and your life of hell,
Because the only other choices lead to death, institutions or jail.
When all to soon it's time to leave; I know our hearts will rend.
But we must keep in mind that's how we began to mend and it doesnt have to end.
So I want everyone's phone number and address,
That way we can stay in touch and dont have to guess.
How our dysfunctional little family continues to live.
After all, it was a piece of our soul we did give.
After all the laughter and all the fun,
When all is said and all is done,
We have to thank God and pray,
But above it all just remember - It's only for today!
