I honestly had a good train of thought for this blog, but sadly I think I just derailed it by turning on the TV. oh well. I think it was just continuing my complaining on class. Oh yeah, thats what it was......

Ok, so at the start of the semester, we were told the use of laptops was A-OK, which I was happy about because my handwriting sucks and I honestly can type a hell of a lot faster than I write. So I had bought a laptop at a cost of about $600 or so, which to me is a hell of a lot of money. 2 months into class they tell us laptops have been banned for use in any class save for computer classes due to "the distractive nature by them upon other students" So seriously, what the hell? I know I'm not the only one that was effected by this, nor am I the only one that's pretty pissed off about this.
I really don't see what the "distractive" nature is if they're being used for note taking! I'm sure there are some students that just sit around and just do jack and use them for other purposes, but what about us that use it as they are intended? Should it not be the teachers decision and not the schools? I mean I would understand if this was a public school or something, but at a college? That's just plain idiotic! I mean seriously, my laptop is now pretty much useless to me, and im out $600 because the bigwigs at the school are too behind to see that electronic note-taking is a hell of a lot faster and more efficient than handwriting.

Yeah that's pretty silly, first of all the students that get distracted probably weren't very interested in the lecture to begin with. Secondly, all students using laptops can just be required to sit in the back rows -- problem solved. Thirdly, just turn off the wireless access, that alone will eliminate most of the usual distractions like internet surfing and emailing.

I agree note-taking with a laptop is definitely much more efficient, though some provision has to be made for diagrams and drawings.

You can challenge the new ruling........I wouldnt spend that much money on something (and yea i would consider 600 dollars a lot of money for something you were using for note taking) that they said I was allowed to use and then take that away because it distracts a certain amount of students who as ben said probably wasnt that interested in learning.....go to office and ask who you can talk to about this situatiion........don't take no there isnt anyone to discuss this for an pay a tuition and your an adult and need to be treated with respect.....i certainly wouldnt take this lying down......stay calm, explain your view, if you can find some studies how laptops have helped students with note taking (and there is studies on EVERYTHING) take that.........but if its that important to you dont just let it go...........Good Luck......
