WASHINGTON (AP) - Yet another recall of Chinese-made toys, but this time not because of lead.

Millions of toys have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia because scientists found the toy beads contain a chemical that converts into a powerful "date rape" drug when ingested. In the U.S. they're called Aqua Dots. In Australia, they're called Bindeez. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia had to be hospitalized.

The beads are sold in general merchandise stores and over the Internet for use in arts and crafts projects.

Scientists say a chemical coating on the beads, when ingested, metabolizes into the so-called date rape drug GHB. When eaten, the compound can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

I saw that on the news.

I know some people...friends, family, and co workers who simply refuse to buy anything if it states "Made in China".

When I saw the cover of USA Today this morning all I could do is shake my head and wonder what is the world coming to.

And they'll keep coming. The worst part is the companies that have products made in China couldn't care less about us or our families.

WTF are the Chinese kids playing with is what I wanna know, cuz I'll buy THAT for my kids!!!

I have a difficult time believing that our toy companies don't specifiy the manufacturing qualifications for the toys they are having built over in China. Are they suing the Chinese toy manufacturers for using led paint and glue that morfs into GHB when ingested?

(and where are the kids parents who are letting them put this stuff in their mouths???)

Just sitting here shaking my head in amazement. My grandchildren will no longer get any toys made in China. Unless like PK says, it's what their children are playing with.

There's really only one way to stop this: Hit 'em where it hurts.

When a corp does a cost-benefit analysis, it factors in the possibility of law suits, etc.

To fix the problem would cost $X. To not fix it and pay fines, legal fees, marketing to overcome the lost Good Will, etc., would cost $Y.

If X is higher than Y, guess what happens.

The only way to stop it is to make it too expensive for them to continue doing it. That means fines, levies, boycotts, law suits, what have you. Corporations just won't notice it till it hurts them where they live...the profit margin.

Exactly why I will not buy anything made in China.

.... this must be the reason that I can't remember masturbating with any of my new toys this past month ...
