I went to a get together at a friend of mines house today. It was great cause this is a friend I work with so there are no pretenses about who we really are. I was watching the kids play and I had a thought come to mind. So I asked my friend " When did you lose that innocence Eric, do you remember? He looked at me and laughed after a moment he said " The first time I went out on a mission with you." I was stunned and speechless. " Don't take it hard man it's just I was different when we returned; and it was like I knew the only thing that mattered was coming home alive." I knew he was right Eric was a man child of 20 yrs when he was assigned to my team. That was when the child left him for good.

I remember that night like it was yesterday Eric was scared and had every reason to be. We were in a situation where we were outnumbered five to one at least maybe more. Without going into details here I will just say that we did what we had to do that night to make sure every man on our team came home ALIVE.

I then thought of the creed we follow in part this is what it says:

We train for war and fight to win, I standready to bring the full spectrum to bear in order to achieve my mission and the goals established by my country. The execution of my duties will be swift and violent when required yet guided by the very principal that I serve to defend.

I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My nation expects me to be harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, everytime. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight.

Like Eric I lost my innocence a long time ago on a battlefield..... When did you lose yours?

My best friend was murdered when I was 14 and less than a month later I lost my other best friend to a car wreck. It was a very bad summer.

I too was 14 when a good friend of mine died, He wasn't "murdered", he died in a hunting accident. Made the whole class realize just cause we were cocky teenagers didn't mean we were invincible.

L4E would you like to dear?....

It depends on what you have in mind...

Seriously though, I hope I never lose the ability to see the best in people and to see the silver lining...to be able to always see the possibilities...to be happy with simple things...

I was 8 years old, a family member(3 yrs older than me) told me he had been being innappropriately touched by another family member....... all I could do was tell him to tell his mom, or I would.....that was when I lost my innocence!

Mine was when I was 29, my Dad had a massive heart attack on a Tuesday and died 3 days later at the age of 54. I was Daddy's Girl and I would have sold my soul to the Devil to keep my Dad alive. But God had other plans for him. I have never been the same since. My Dad would have been 70 on Halloween.

I'm like L4E Steve calls me naive cause I see the good in people. I refuse to see bad in anyone till they have hurt me personally. And I see the silver lining also

Honestly, when I was 8. The same age as my youngest daughter. I thank God everyday she'll never face the things I've faced in my lifetime.

Great post!!

I rememeber very clearly that day. Well, perhaps I only rememeber that events that changed me. The moments from that morning are gone. The story is too long to post as a comment. I believe the story is worthy of a blog. So, for my answer look for a blog.
