Good for some of us who can't find the perfect guy/girl like myself...
I want to know would it necessarily be immoral or unethical to have an electronic companion in that sense? I know that its been explored through popular culture, but if technology were very advanced today, would you consider a robot as a mate?

After reading the article you provided, I think it is entirely possible that it will happen. Not that all Humans would want to marry a robot, but surely some would, or at least have sex with one. It sure the hell beats no sex at all now doesn't it?

Hehe, reminds me of an episode of Futurama. "You've got metal fever, boy! Metal fever!"

I heard that on the radio yesterday too. After he read the story, the announcer them said that women have been using "electronic companions" for quite some time now so it wouldn't be as much of a stretch of the imagination for them.

Gee, that sounds like a question that Straddle would come up with. There are non living things that can appear that way such as people being married to their career or, in the case of guys, their car. But in the overall, the most comparable thing would be...you guessed it...our computers.
To me, while it is an electronic companion, it is not a life form. My computer is my companion for playing games like backgammon, yahtzee, spades, etc. in lieu of human opponents. I can also see with a liberal stretch, how non humans such as pets can be a companion as they are alive, and in the case of guide dog, perhaps the most important and significant individual in that person's life. But if you are totally a hermit with no human interaction, does your vibrator or puter represent a mate? Hell, no. You are simply alone in lieu of significant human relationships including friends and family. I won't give a thought on debate concerning pets, but if it is not living, it is a toy, tool, or both. Good, albeit odd, question.

Man, I dunno Luna, some of the real men I have slept with were robot enough for me. I dunno, it would take some seriously creative programming to make a robot seem human enough for sex. Otherwise I could just use my dildo and cut out the profiteering side of the equation.

then begs the question, if humans can have a robot built to match their perfect mate, what would happen to society, would we eschew other humans and the chance for love there with a tailor made robot? how would the human race propegate? i'm not knocking the robots, but i prefer my lovers ( on the rare occasions i find them) to be fleshy and warm and powered by food and blood

Well,Raven, if there were people against interracial coupling, now its gay marriages quite possibly dating and marrying artificial life would be up on the table for debate. But I think like the first two,if it doesn't harm anyone..why not? Of course for those who do have a relationship with a robot, there's going to be that small offshoot that prefers human company.
I hear ya Nacho.Sometimes we don't feel like dealing with the man,but a *certain* part.Planks of wood made better lovers than most my dates.I have the splinters to prove it.
Ash, I must say...that's a right mighty fine looking picture of Jude you got there.I'd hit it until the circuits caught on fire.
But if you are totally a hermit with no human interaction, does your vibrator or puter represent a mate? Hell, no. Well,Bruce, you haven't known the folks I've known...I mean,I know that its no guaranteed replacement for human interaction as since robots are made from human hands,by proxy they can be faulty, too. But for some of sad pathetic geeks and nerds,it may be a dream come true.I think they addressed it in the article.Besides, its just wishful thinking,a wild fancy of imagination..
the announcer them said that women have been using "electronic companions" for quite some time now so it wouldn't be as much of a stretch of the imagination for them And men too. There's a big market for them in Japan..God bless 'em.And I know you heard of Real Dolls.I'm guessing those are exclusively for women too?
Aw,snap Then and Now,fellow Futurama fan too? I feel like Zoidburg:"Yay!People are paying attention to me!" Oh,and "I will always remember you Fry- MEMORY DELETED."
Well,Blue,I think that if there was a choice between sex with a robot,or no sex at all...some would still try to seek out a human to have sex with.As I mentioned to Raven, there are always going to be that offshoot that prefer older values in this case, i.e,copulating and marriage with a human.

I think a robot would be good for some and not for others.. For me I think it would work good if I could design exactly what I looked for in a woman as far as personality, figure and also have the ability to change those looks/ figure attributes if I want to later in the future..
Marriage with a robot---> I don't see the need for that..After all a robot has no feelings and marriage is all about strong feelings by both..
