When I'm on the computer I have the radio on in the background. The newcaster just related that an estimated 20 million Americans have cavities and probably HALF of them do NOT have dental insurance. Shocking !

Well, neither do I. SO WHAT. The dentist will take something besides insurance cards. It's called C A S H ! Not only that, my dentist gives a discount for paying the same day of service so they don't have to pay someone to spend time submitting paperwork to the insurance companies over... and over..... and over....

Now, I can just hear some of the insurance-less underpriviliged out there sputtering...... but.... but...... if I pay CASH..... I won't be able to get my ipod or designer jeans....... $130 nikes...... etc, etc.......

Well, wake up...... does it matter how you are dressed if you ain't got NO TEETH?

When I was a kid..... (or even now for that matter)..... my folks paid their bills when they went to the dentist or eye doctor, or even the regular doctor. Health insurance was for if you had to go to the hospital. Everything else was paid for at the time and luxuries were something you SAVED up for.

Now, people buy the luxuries first... charge it if you have to, but GET IT NOW. As for the dentist eye doctor...regular doctor..... well, we should all have the RIGHT to insurance and SOMEONE ELSE should pay for it. After all we don't pay for our RIGHTS, do we???

Here's the bottom line: People don't understand the difference between NEEDS(what is required in order to live,) and WANTS(what you would like to have but isn't a requirement to sustain life.)

It's pathetic.

When I was growing up, my dad was a cop... back then it didn't pay well, and it didn't come with very good benefits. We had hospitalization only, no doctors visits, nothing for dental. Yet my parents felt it was critically important that all 4 of us get our teeth cleaned and examined twice a year, so they saved up for it and we all went, whether we wanted to or not. I don't have dental either, haven't for most of my own adult life, yet make sure my kids go twice a year as well, and have any work done that they need. Glad I was brought up to recognize what is important.

Insurance? What's that? I know I have the choice, but it is either paying rent or insurance - has been for the past 4 years. My clothes come from thrift stores, and restaurants are foreign territory to me. Everything is cash - don't have a credit card.

I think dental insurance is a "right" as much as any other medical insurance would be. Trouble is, too many people view dentistry as primarily about aesthetics and not about physical health.
