Are you ready for this one folks???? As I need a cane to walk with I bought myself one that I found that was not only functional but attractive a year ago. And for the past year, I have been all over this city (I'm not a hermit). Well just recently I had to return a few papers at the SS building and being myself, I did my thing, greeting the security guard as usual and chatted with him about family. ( we go way back in friendship). Time went by and I proceeded to the next step in the roped off cattle path. When my turn was done, I headed out when the guard opened the door for me and stept outside to give me a hug. (yes, Im the huggy Lady). And the following conversation proceeded. Guard: "You know thats a beautiful cane you have, where did you buy that?" Showing him the cane I said the name of the business and we continued to chat about current ongoings in this city. After awhile I noticed that he was trying his darndest to unscrew the top of my cane off with no results so I took it from him and said: "It works like this" as I swiftly popped the hilt and showed him. Well to my surprise, I was read the rigtious act. Yes the rigtious as in rediculas and extreemly laughable. As it turns out, my cane has a small but short sword inside and this is concidered a weapon and I was tougne lashed about the fact that I need to carry a permit for it. As this senerio finally ended. I, being an up right and honest citizen agreed to do my duty and get the proper papers, A.S.A.P. so I headed to the police station. Once inside, I was directed to the person in charge and given papers to fill out. Before signing my John Handcock I re-read my work and began to put pen to paper when I noticed the header on the top. I had been given a gun permit to fill out. Now, those of you who know me, know that I'll point out stupidity if it's really worth the trouble and being an old contankerous woman, I met this challange with full steam. Not signing the paper I asked for the right ones to fill out. I was told that the ones I had in my hand were the right ones. I was also told that I needed to take a 6 hour corse in the proper care and use of said item. (a gun or rifle). and pay an enormous amount of cash and be recorded on their books. Well, I'm sorry folks but I just dont see why I need to go through all of that malarky. I guess I'm a true believer of "the right to bare arms" and jumped on my band wagon. This included my theroy of "when your out of bullets, I still have a sword. So as it goes for now, I am rounding up signitures for a petiton ( last count 523) to be brought to the city counsel, and hopefully get it on a ballot vote, The right to carry a sword with sword permit. I know this is all quite a fuss but in this city, many of us carry swords not guns, and we keep them peacebound. That means its on "safety lock". So my quest begins with the peers of this city. I laugh when I think of this whole day and I'm wondering if anyone in those official buildings even thought about how I managed to walk through the metal detectors with out a single buzz...I'll never tell...

Well, it goes back to the old ammendment argument...is the right to keep and bear arms meant to adress the formation of state millitias or does it extend to the ability to have a weapon with which to defend yourself?

Honestly, I say the point is moot.

The reason being, anyone who is involved in a criminal activity gives up the protection that is offered to them by the law. That is a commonly accepted legal stance that goes back even before we were a country.

In other words, if someone assaults you with a weapon, you should have the right to defend yourself and they lose their right to legal protection should they become harmed in due course of their own actions.

It bothers me that we keep having to make new laws when the old ones work perfectly well. I guess we're just trying to make our legal system compatable with the way we make our cell phone contracts.

lol...Good story, I'm with ya on that one. Me having gone through the police academy years ago and into security today I have a few guns, but no swords. I too am a big believer in right to bare arms, but it's the undesirables out there that makes it difficult for all of us descent people that want to carry a gun (or sword... haha) around for protection purposes because of all the paperwork involved. As for how that metal detector missed your sword, SCARY! lol Anyway, best of luck to you. Shawn
