Now that I got my self-aggrandizing "I'm back" blog out of my system, it's time to discuss something a little more important, a little more global... namely, my body.
That was tongue-in-cheek (FYI), but anyhow, remember how I went on and on a few months back about my new leaf turned? You know, that exercise regimen that was going to produce that fit, toned, strapping gentleman that's lurking inside me? Well, things were moving along just fine until--you guessed it--internship and all of its sucky hours and lost meals and underslept nights.
During my first two months, I not only didn't make it to the gym, I lost at least 12 pounds. I'm pretty lean to begin with, and lord knows that's not a recipe for body-building. Then when my schedule lightened briefly, I felt too burned out and had lost all of my momentum. Then my schedule got crappy again, and so on. At any rate, that's a major--MAJOR--setback. I'm trying to make up for many years of being pathologically lazy, and doctoring--god bless it--is getting in my damn way.
Now, normally after getting into a rut like that (ruts, not rats, are the theme of this blog--FYI), I would sulk about it for months, obsessing about the fact that I should go to the gym yet never actually do it because I hate starting from scratch. This time, though, I managed to scratch for some time during an elective rotation and actually got back into it for a few days--sans trainer, for my first time ever. Then I stopped again. Then I was on a nights rotation, and my schedule was all fucked up, and one morning in a fit of mania after a busy night of tending to moderately ill cardiac patients, I went to the gym prior to sleeping. I actually felt amazing after that, but I never did it again out of exhaustion. Time passed. Today, I finally went again after another hiatus of about three weeks.
I gotta say... although I'm frustrated that I can't just fit a routine of going to the gym 2-3 times per week into my constantly-changing schedule, I'm starting to become fond of my mentality of just going whenever I can and recognizing that my schedule might just never accommodate me. It's not ideal, but hey--life isn't always fair.
So... what do YOU do when you get into a rut, or encounter a setback? I'm still learning how to cope in a productive way, but I'm getting better at it. I'm curious to hear some inspiring stories of the fight against adversity, no matter how trivial. Or you can describe a rut that you just can't seem to climb out of. Your choice!

What works best for me is when I get up and go straight to the gym. Those three days a week I get up 3 hrs earlier than normal. It sucks at first, but once you get used to it, you look forward to it.

You probably do alot of walking in your job ...which is a good form of exersize...all you really need is some form of strenght training...I have two ten pound weights that i use for a few minutes each day and use my bike for cardio and transportation...so I really don't need the use of a gym.
