I dropped my son at school this morning and headed on over to Starbucks for a morning treat. My bank has a branch right near there so once I got my coffee I headed over to use the ATM.
Pulled up alongside the ATM, card in hand, and the machine says, "Temporarily Unavailable". Bank lady must have been cleaning it out or something. I really needed to get some cash so I tried to think where my bank has another ATM. I remembered that the convenience store up the street had one so I headed there.
I pulled in and hopped out of the car and ran into the store. I found the ATM, got the cash I needed, turned to leave, but suddenly noticed they had ice cream on sale! Couldn't pass that up, so I got a couple half gallons to stock the freezer with.
There was a guy in line ahead of me, and his transaction seemed to be taking a while so the clerk motioned for me to put the ice cream down on the counter while I waited.
Finally the guy paid his money and the clerk packed up his stuff and he left. The clerk, a young gal, nicely asked me how I was and I told her I was fine. I asked her how she was.
She replied by telling me that she had to get up really early this morning (I assumed to get to her job at the store) and she started laughing. I said that I know it's tough to get up early if you're not a morning person. She replied that it wasn't that- just that she had FIVE kids to get ready every day so that made it more difficult for her to get going. I said five kids must be a lot of work and she giggled, saying especially for a SINGLE mom! I laughed and told her I was a single mom, too, but that I only had ONE child to chase after, not five! I told her I couldn't imagine how much work it must be for her by herself with all those children. Like having a job before going to the job. She laughed and said she agreed, that she never had a day off. We both laughed and said that Moms never have days off. She packed my ice cream into a bag and thanked me and said to have a nice day. I told her to do the same.
As I walked out the door I started thinking about her and her situation. Being a single mom, with five kids, working as a convenience store clerk to support her family.
I really have a lot of respect and admiration for her. I have no idea what the circumstances were that made her a single mom, but all I know is how tough I have it with just ONE child and she has FIVE!
I also came away with a feeling of appreciation. This little encounter made me think about how lucky I am- how lucky I am that I have a good job so I don't have to worry about money so much. About how lucky I am that my family lives close by and are willing to help and support me when I need it the most. I know that not every single mom is that blessed!
So here's to us, girls, and our stresses, trials, tribulations, sorrows- but mostly to our JOYS!
Have a great day everyone!!

I did it, raised two of em! 24/7, their father doesn't so much as call to see how they are. It was a struggle, but to think 5 of them....God bless her!!

Here's to all of us Single Parents out there!!!!! Men and Women!!!

I know exactly how that is too...raising 3 children by myself, working 2 jobs most the times 60hrs+ a week to make sure everything is paid for and that they have what they need and that there are gifts for christmas, birthdays,'s not easy raising children with 2 parents, let alone with just 1.
Thank God I have the support of my family to stand behind me when I need help.
Kudos to all the Single Parents...give yourself a pat on the back and go treat yourself to something special deserve it!!!

It's not an easy job! I know, I've raised my son alone for the past 12 years. I can't begin to imagine raising 5 alone! Kudos to you for making us all stop to think how lucky we do have it!

Just wanted to add this....

Raising one, after a divorce was rough sometimes. I can't imagine 5 on my own. That women, and all like her (including single Dads) do deserve appreciation. There are many parents that don't even bother to know where their children are, much less get up early and get them ready for school and such.

I also wanted to add that I didn't mean to leave single Dads out of the kudo-fest! They deserve admiration, too!

Yes, Kudos to all the single parents of the world. I did it with two of my own and now helping my daughters with thier kids. It's a tough job but someone has to do it. Kids are our futures.
