It's UNFAIR I tell ya... to women! posted 9/25/2007 9:30:21 PM | 1 kudo what's this?     report abuse   skinonskin Ever since the airline's inception, the pilot's system control area has always been called the COCKPIT! But now, we have women pilots- we even had a female Shuttle pilot! I propose to change that and rename the pilot's area the GENITALPIT! Traveler to flight attendant: Where are the pilots? Attendant: They're in the GENITALPIT, the doors closed! Any other renaming ideas you can come up with? 	Well, since most of the flying uses only the pilots arms, I say the armpit is appropriate. Flight attendant to flight atendant after luch; " Oh my God does the armpit smell like onions or what?? " Or since it has to be quiet up there, how about the " Zi pit?" or to be silly, the "Car Pit" Or the " Tar Pit?' I know that on DEVO's private jet it's called the " Whi Pit" Or since pilots are notorious players, how about the " Ta Pit?' Or an airline from georgia? The Peach Pit. Or in reference to what I must now do, the " Stah Pit"

Cockpit as a term for the pilot's compartment in an aircraft first appeared in 1914 and from about 1935 cockpit also came to be used informally to refer to the driver's seat of a car, especially a high performance one, and this is official terminology in Formula One. The term is most likely related to the sailing term for the coxswain's station in a Royal Navy ship, and later the location of the ship's rudder controls.

	Then again, being around airforce people and some aviation training myself, I've never heard anyone refer to an airliner flight control area as anything other than a flightdeck.
