Today is my husbands 69th. Birthday. He has now lived as a stroke patient 8 years, 8 months and 14 days.
All week I contemplated on how to make his day special for him. Considering he didn't remember it was his birthday I tried to be inventive for him and decided he would have 8 hours of gift giving - one gift to unwrap an hour for 8 hours.
Now there really isn't anything he needs or can possibly even use given he is bed-ridden so anything would have made him happy.
I stayed up late last night finishing a new quilt with matching pillow cases for his bed. As as life long Harley "enthusiast" (51 years) I took all his old Harley scarves and made the patchwork pillow cases with just enough of them left over to weave into the quilt. He cries easily these days so the Harley Black and Orange staring back at him did make him weep momentarily for the days gone by.
The rest of his suprises were Adult size sippy cups, new assistive plates and bowels, utensils, bed gowns in VIBRANT colors, and a very special Harley patchwork bib.
I long ago eliminated fried foods from our diet but today I figured what the hell, I am making him fried chicken. He eyes lit up and with a question in his voice and limited vocabulary he said "fry chicken?"
He has just finished the last bite of his Baskin Robbins Birthday Ice Cream Cake (also a no no in his diet) and sort of resembles the 1-year old with cake and ice cream covering is face. But he is happy. It's been a day of treats for him.
He probably won't remember a lot of the details tomorrow but I know that for just today he was a very happy boy!!

DesertSmile, you are an angel.  I had to set here and dry me eyes until I could see the screen to post.  Love like that is wonderful. There will be special rewards for you and the endless love you have showed him.
