Two and two make four, a child learns that in his earliest experiences with figures, it is a simple calculation that can be proven in many ways, it is plain and obivious, there can be no doubt or confusion until it is found necessary to substantiate, manifest, computation by intricate problems in algerbra and trigonmetry and calculus, by studies in squares and motions and curves--- and suddently it becomes evident that two and two may not make four after all. As man pursues knowledge he continually discovers that what had seemed simple to him in the beginning becomes more and more complex as he advances.

I think that is why the phrase "the innocence of children" is so important. They haven't learned the harsh realities of life and life is so simple.

Let's all be children again!!

I kinda agree for certain kinds of knowledge but disagree with others. With areas of knowledge like history, economics and social sciences things tend to look simple and clear-cut from a distance but increase in complexity as we delve into the myriad of details. Other areas however, such as mathematics and the hard sciences like physics, the further one goes, the more general, abstract and all-encompassing the theories become. With mathematics for example, number theory used to be a hodge-podge of clever tricks until mathematicians subsumed it into the more general framework of abstract algebra e.g. group theory, at which point what used to be convoluted proofs of number-theoretic results became very simple consequences of group theory. In physics we of course have the drive towards grand unified theories of everything, unifying all the forces in the known universe. So in such areas we are seeing more and more once disparate areas being unified into more and more general theories, thereby decreasing the overall complexity of knowledge.
