After being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said:

"Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning, and I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits.

You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem. You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job.

I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of anti-social behavior, make sure all students pass the state exams, even those who don't come to school regularly or complete any of their assignments.

Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with handicaps get an equal education regardless of the extent of their mental or physical handicap. I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter and report card.

All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a big smile AND on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps!

You want me to do all of this and then you tell me...

"I CAN'T PRAY?"

Our teachers are totally under paid and over worked! It's a soap box I had best not get up on because, once I do, it's hard to get me to step down!

It makes you wonder why anyone would want to be a teacher today.

I still think Paul Simon says it best (albiet, from a different perspective).
"When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
And 'though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall"

Being in FL which ranks somewhere around the bottom of the heap as far as quality of education and teacher salaries, (anyone see a parallel there?), I can't see why anyone in their right mind would want to become a teacher in this or any state. I guess all those poor souls must be telling the truth when they say they do it out of love of teaching.

ummm cause they get summers off?

We complain that our children are not getting a good education, unfortunately many times it does fall on the teachers because they have tenure and they just dont give a crap. And parents are no longer involved because its taken both parent working to pay for the basics. Families no longer spend that together time, homework isnt done with mom and dad checking it over. Is it because thier isnt prayer in school, probably not, but it sure doesnt help not having it does it?

Both parents work cause they want that BMV in the driveway or to buy those 150.00 pair of shoes, or the blackberry the little darlings "just can't live without". Sorry folks my mom raised us three on one job. We had what was needed a few extras when she had it, things were tight but I'm so glad and grateful I said the "pledge allegience to the flag". We didn't pray in class but when I got introuble I was sure saying Oh god Oh god and I was allowed!
