I have begun, a bit early, my annual winter cleaning and disposal of junk.

I was just mentioning to a friend that I am amazed at how much we can accumulate in a years time. It was only last year this time I went through the same process, so proud of my clean shelves and drawers afterwards and darn if they are not full again.

When I moved the household to the desert 5-1/2 yrs. ago I rummaged through 25 years in one house and eliminated literally tons of unwanted items and simple junk. I then transported to the new house boxes of what I thought was important enough to keep.

Guess what 5-1/2 years later many of those boxes of important stuff are still in the garage and have never been opened.

Combine that with the normal daily accumulation of stuff and gifts that are never used and you have a whole lot of "stuff" that occupy space.

It seems the older I get the less I want "stuff". How much of a thing it too much?

So, as I sit here taking a break and thinking on this subject, this will be the year I open those boxes of 5-1/2 years and dispose of what is truly unimportant. I will finally distribute to her grandkids and great grandkids the last of my mother-n-laws momentos that I have dearly held on to.

I will empty that box of wall decorations that will never ever come back in style, at least for me. I will give away some of the exta dishes and place settings and hope that the next user feels the memories created from the dinner table they once sat upon.

It may take me several weeks but I think when all is finished I will feel clean and free of unwanted "stuff".

I know how you feel DesertSmile. I boxed my life about 4 years ago, sold the house and moved in with Mom and Dad to take care of them. (a real life change ) I kept my life in storage for two years and retired and moved to an East Texas Lake and separate houses again. My old life was put in the garage to set in the same boxes for two more years. Now because of Dad passing Mom and I have moved back to the house is Houston and this time I decided if I haven't needed it in four years, I most not need it. The garage looks so much better and and I do not miss the old live at all.

I'm getting ready to move here in a few weeks from outside Pittsburgh to Marietta, Ohio area so I am going to be ditching alot of stuff. I tend to accumulate and so do my kids. Never realized until I started looking at things to move and what I really needed. I think I'm going to go with the one year rule, if I haven't worn it or used it in the last year it is history. I can't wait to start again fresh.

I've lived in the same house now for 32 years! I am innundated with stuff. The biggest clean out I've ever done was back in 1987. Got rid of half my furniture and closets just FULL of stuff went out. It was a very freeing experience.

Three years ago I rebuilt the house I have lived in for thirty five years got rid of all the unwanted/unneeded things and damned if I don't still have to do that every year still. April first starts my "cleansing" month. Then I start all over saving crap that I know I will throw away again in April

It's a never -ending job isn't it?? I have accumulated so much. Sometimes I just don't know where to start. When I do pack things up, it goes to charity if nobody in the family wants it. I need to start going through some stuff soon. Good luck with your unpacking.
