A certain medication is being advertised to help those afflicted with restless leg syndrome. In the television commercials after noting other potential side effects, it is stated, "Please notify your doctor if you experience intense gambling and/or sexual urges." I don't personally suffer from restless leg syndrome, but I do enjoy gambling in moderation and have a healthy libido; so I was curious just how much this medication can allegedly affect those urges. Any personal experience with this medication anyone cares to share would be enlightening; otherwise I just wanted to know who else pondered the ramifications of taking this medicaiton after hearing these potential side effects.

The thing is that a lot of medications have different ramifications from taking it, I mean look at birth control...But that is a good question for any medication TC ty for noticing!!

the class of drugs used are dopamine agonists - that is they increase the levels of dopamine available. in the case of restless leg, they are doing this because dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with motor control. the working theory is that low levels of dopamine are causing 'bad' or incongruent signals to reach the muscles.
dopamine also happens to regulate pleasure and reward :) the intensive and compulsive 'risk' behaviors of many people are keyed into those centers of the brain, as well. so....bump up the dopamine...bump up the addictions.
the population that sees these effects are fairly small, from what i've seen.....roughly 2-3% in most of the studies. but...2-3% is still worrisome.
