John awoke that morning to a strange stillness. His bedroom window was open but not
The faintest hint of air disturbed the curtains. Nothing moved; nothing stirred: not a
Visible thing betrayed a sign of life or motion.
A terrific understanding ---- veritably fear and ecstasy in one took hold of John's heart.
He leaped to the window , It was unbelievable! People laid on the sidewalks in strange postures. Some sat hunched over in doorways, others stood as though they have been
Immobilizes on the spot without warning. The streets were crammed with vehicles but
Not one moved. Not a bird flew; not a single indicated life. A pall of death covered
Everything. The branches of the trees were low and listless. The flowers seemed to droop. Even the sun, which was close and oppressive , appeared to have suspended
Movement.

John dressed slowly, thumping the floor all the while to assure himself. He heard his
Own sounds, but nothing else. Life all about him had ceased. Everybody----everything
Was dead. Miraculously, he had escaped the calamity. The death, which had come
During the night, had passed him by. He was alone in a universe that ceased to be. He
Was the only living thing in the world-----IN THE WORLD! HE OWNED THE WORLD!
Everything was his----the cars, the trains the stores, the theatres, the ships ---everything belonged to him, everything was there for the taking. The things which
He had not dreamed to own in his wildest fancies were now at his disposal.

Vaguely, John remembered visualizing such a situation. He has spent many happy
Hours in fancy, thinking of pleasures that could be his own if reality didn't keep
Them away. Now his wildest dream had come true!
When he came out onto the street, he immediately spied the beautiful , low slung,
Massive limousine at the corner. He couldn't restrain himself from clapping his
Hands in anticipation. "Oh, brother! He thought, If only this isn't a dream!"
It wasn't a dream as John soon discovered. A moment later, he was speeding
Through the streets. It was great driving----no cars to watch, no pedestrians, no
Traffic signals, no policemen. The thought of policemen led to another idea.
He stopped the car at a cement building. This was the structure that housed his life savings of ninety-three dollars. It had been an important sum in his previous
Existence. The doors of the bank were open. Some of the tellers were in there cages---
Propped up against the bars in grotesque positions that made John smile. He eased
Himself into one of the cages with a nervousness that rapidly changed to bravado.
He picked up a handful of bills and stuffed them into his pocket. Then he thought of his
Position and laughed aloud.

What will you do with the money john?" he mocked himself. Will you buy things from yourself? . . You own everything."
He scooped up bills and silver and hurled the money into the air. He derived a peculiar
Thrill from doing it and the sound of silver bounding on the floor pleased him.
" Here I am ---- mightier than Croesus," he said to himself.
He walked from one cage to another-----throwing money about him and tearing bills
Of large denomination . Suddenly, he picked up several packages of coins and hurled
Them through one of the windows. "I'll let some air into this filthy place." he said
Savagely.

After this he felt hungry and he walked out of the bank and looked for a restaurant.
He found one across the street. "Aristocratic as the devil." he sneered, as he noticed
The resplendent appointments. Well it befits a president of a bank---of all the banks."
He glanced at a waitress sitting at one of the tables, her head resting on her arms
As though she were calmly asleep. He dug into his pocket and brought out several
Fifty dollar bills which he threw at her. "Bet that's the largest you ever got for doing
Nothing," he said giggling.

He ate greedily ., sampling all the delicacles which caught his fancy. He didn't to bother
To cook anything. When he satisfied himself . And that's just what I'll do----and brother
It will be a honey!"
Then he felt again the disturbing sense of premonition. The air was very heavy. He
Walked out into the street and suddenly realized that he was praying for rain or thunder
----anything to make noise. He picked up a rock and threw it through the windshield of
The limousine. He found a heavy iron bar and started to walk along the street, crashing car windows and store fronts along the way.

He stepped into a paper store, it was decorated, in holiday spirit with festive streamers
Of crepe paper. John was seized with sudden inspiration. He searched his pockets and
Found a package of matches, deliberately, he touched the match to one of the paper streamers. The flame shot to the roof, developed into a hungry blaze, and suddenly the
The room was an inferno of fire.

John walked out into the street once more. He felt a strange exhilaration. He didn't
Know he wanted to do exactly. He knew that he was yearning desperately for something.
The craving was so strong that it began to to pain him. Then it came to him, he wanted to
Hear the sound of a human voice. He wanted companionship. The craving became so
Insistent that it coursed through his veins like a hunger for drugs. Suddenly he was
Obsessed with a terrible fear.

Behind him the fire roared like a mountainous furnace. Huge spires of flames leaped
Into the sky. John walked faster, then he began to run. He started to scream "Fire!" with
All the power in his lungs, with the desperate hope that the warning might awaken some
Of the people.
Nothing responded ; nobody moved. He knew that everything was dead, but a desperate
Yearning for compassion overcame him. If only something could show him a little
Sympathy.

He turned back and ran rapidly toward the fire. The entire street was a mass of flames.
The beat scorched him as he approached, but he did not falter. Bolts of fire licked his clothes and seared his skin, but he did not stop. On and on he went, until the heat matched the degree of fire within him. He felt indescribable pain. Then he seemed
Swallowed by a blast of white hot fire and in the glory of the flame the revelation
Came to him. He had lit the match himself. It had to be so. Fate , in such cases, was irrevocable.........................!!!
