WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand couple is looking to call their newborn son Superman -- but only because their chosen name of 4Real has been rejected by the government registry.

Pat and Sheena Wheaton say they will get around the decision by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages by officially naming their son Superman but referring to him as 4Real, the New Zealand Herald newspaper has reported.

The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realising their baby was "for real".

They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the registrar said a name had to be a sequence of characters.

Pat Wheaton said he was considering appealing against the decision through the courts, but whatever happens he won't be budged on his choice.

"No matter what its going to stay 4Real," Wheaton told the Herald, "I'm certainly not a quitter".

A spokesman for the Department of Internal Affairs, which operates the registry told the Herald discussions with the Wheatons about their son's name were continuing.

The baby is now two months old, after the Wheatons first applied to register his name in later June.

OMG, I just read that on Yahoo. People amaze me with retarded names for their kids. I can't imagine that child is going to be thankful for a name like that when he's trying to climb the corporate ladder!!

Well 4Real is better than being named Dipshit...
I agree, some names kids have are not unique, but down right
What ever happened to Dick, Jane, and Spot.

Oh this is a real story, i thought it was a is it a sad and bad 4 real joke?????

Aug 9 @ 8:12AM
Geez I guess that's better than something like Long Dong or Dick Lick or something like that.

A kid with a username.....hmmmm weird

Why not 4|23/-\|_ ???

Aug 9 @ 8:46AM
well we know that child wont be confused with any other during role call .......

The poor kid will be picked on and make fun of all his young life. When he grows up he will be so screwed up and have so many issues and problems. The parents have doomed him to a life of failure.

Maybe.. maybe not.. I mean come on.. some people with unusual names have made something of themselves that they might not have had the strength of character to do if they had been named Dick or Jane. Consider Dweezil, or Soliel MoonFry, or hmmm.. I'm sure there are more but I'm not coming up with them at the moment.

More likely, in this day and age that 4Real would be accepted as a 'cool' name. How many rappers etc take bizarro names to make it big? This one is born with it. I don't see the issue as long as your last name isn't Hogg and you name your daughter Ima. That's just cruel.

I saw this today, too, and was going to post something on my 360 page about it. I'm surprised that no one has said anything about the fact that the NZ government denied them what I would consider a right to name their kid whatever they want. Yes, the unusual name caught my attention, but what really struck me was that their government can veto a name...I think that's wrong but hey, I don't live in NZ, either. Different strokes I guess!

Oh, and anyone remember Moon Unit and Dweezle Zappa? Yeah, we get some strange names here, too. A friend of mine named her baby Finest. FINEST? He's cute but...what???

Sometimes it's less a matter of principle than practicality. For all we know, the NZ electronic registry of names may have some kind of alphabetical restriction in their software. While I agree everyone should have a right to whatever name they want, once they try to do something unusual and push the boundaries, practical difficulties are bound to arise. Of course, if the parents believe in that name that much, they can fight to change the system. But as with everything, a cost benefit analysis needs to be performed. Are all battles worth fighting for?
