For those of you, who don’t know this about me, I am a wildlife rehabilitator. I take in sick injured or abandoned animals fix them and send them back out where they belong.
Last year I rehabilitated 17 raccoons and released them. I am not doing it this year due to funding, WR is NOT funded by the government and all monies come out of our own pockets or from donations. So please if you give to charity, find a local rehabber in your area and donate what you can. ANYTHING is appreciated, not just monies, supplies are a big chunk out of the old wallet. (No this is not a plea to get people to send me money. Like I said I am not doing it this year.)
Now on with my story… yesterday, driving home from work at 7 in the morning I see a momma raccoon and a baby cross the road. I slow down and stop to watch them on the side of the road. Well, baby is chirring up a storm (very distinct sound for those of you who have never heard it) and “she” comes running back out into the road and under my van trying to get to me. Well, momma just looks at me, takes a step to come get her and then stops. I said (yes I talk to the animals) “Well, Get her Momma”.
Now I swear on anything I have, Momma looks at me cocks her head and then comes and gets baby.
Momma gets baby off to the side of the road, whips her ass, (cuz momma coons are like that) sends baby off into the corn field, turns looks at me and follows her. There was definitely a moment there, she knew I was ok. Now granted, I can’t explain this, but I have a strong “Mother” instinct that she was one of my babies from last year and she recognized my voice.
It was a very special moment for me and I am very thankful for it.
