Maggiemae posted a blog today...simply titled..."THEN"

Anyhow, I thought of a song right away...

Bob Dylan's - 'The Times They Are A-Changin''

Which got me to thinking of the greatest songwriters of all time, I've thought about it before Mags' blog. But it got to me to wondering...who are yours?

For me it isn't an easy thing to do...pick the greatest songwriter of all time, as there were many. Hank Williams, Sr., Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Jim Croce, Jimi Hendrix, James Taylor, John Fogerty, Cat Stevens, Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, Roy Orbison, Eric Clapton, and John Mellencamp just to name a few.

Anyhow, as I said...I thought about this a while back. And I came up with my top 3, as I simply can not pick from just one.

And they are...

Johnny Cash...

This man was not only a great songwriter, he was also a great stroyteller. This guy could even take songs written by others, and almost make them his own. I think it'd be hard to argue that Johnny Cash is the greatest of all-time.

I don't think those who truly appreciate music could say anything less. Hell, even his peers...those who came before him, or since...some of which are considered to be great songwriters. Have even said he just might be the greatest ever!

Bob Dylan...

Many don't care for Mr. Dylans music, and even more don't care fo his singing...saying he can't sing worth a shit, and I guess that is true. LOL

However, he was/is, I think. One of the greatest...perhaps even the greatest songwriter of all time?! Like him or not, like his style of music or not, like his singing voice or not...I can't see how anyone could take anything away from Mr. Dylan's accomplishments!

I had a difficult time picking between Jim Morrison, and Jim Croce. But I have to go with Jim Croce...

Jim Croce...

Unfortunately died in his prime. Few artists have ever been able to pull off such down-to-earth storytelling like Croce could. Listen to the songs Croce recorded, one cannot help but wonder how far his extraordinary talents could have taken him if he would have perhaps lived a few years longer.

Anyhow, who would be your top 3, or even who you think is the greatest of all-time? Thanks to all in advance for your comments/posts...

Good selections!

I am afraid this will taint me forever but I can't deny their greatness...

Burt Bachrach - A legend, a true legend!

Barry Manilow - I can't believe I just admitted that!

Lennon/McCartney - Hard to deny not only their writing ability collectively but their talents separately as well. Nothing speaks to the heart like a well written piece. Some of their stuff was so good, Ringo even got by with singing it.

If I had to say greatest, it would be Lennon/McCartney. They were truly phenominal.

Damn! You named so many greats! And of those my fav would probably be Willie Nelson. Most of the world has no idea how many he wrote that because they were performed by someone else, no one associates them to him! Garth Brooks another fantastic writer! Alan Jackson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, so many talents, so little time to name them all!!! Merle Haggard, dammit, now they'll be popping up in my head all night! Good blog CC!

I have to say that I absolutely love Jim Croce's "Time in a bottle" which was released after his untimely death in a plane crash.
It should be noted though that Elton John only writes the music for his songs as he himself admits that his lyric writing capabilities are crap. So he should share the prize of being one of the greatest songwriters of all time with Bernie Taupin.

Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia...

I can't even count the Grateful Dead songs that Hunter wrote the lyrics to...from 1961 when he met Jerry Garcia 'til present he is still writng and coming up with incredible stuff...then Jerry puts his words into motion, "What a long strange trip it's been" indeed!!! These guys? I still listen everyday...Jerry is still jammin' and making me smile, cry and laugh. It's almost his birthday!!! August 1rst...and the tragic anniversary on the 10th soon after.

Arlo Guthrie...

Every Thanksgiving I religously listen to Alice's Restaurant Massacre...and of course many other unforgettable tunes that will forever stand the test of time.

There are so many others tied for third...Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, Pete Townsend, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Jim Morrison, Carlos Santana, Steve Miller, the list goes on forever!!! I know there are obviously many more like Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton...somebody stop me!

There are so many truly great song writers I could never name them all.
Mostly I guess ,because I like a wide diversity of music.
But a good blog none the less.

Jul 26 @ 7:33PM
Kudo just for mentioning Johnny Cash. He will always be one of my favorites.

Jul 26 @ 7:41PM
Eric Clapton is my Favorite as you well know!

2nd would be Stevie Wonder

3rd Bruce Springsteen (lost my virginity to his music!!!)

Jul 26 @ 8:17PM
In blurring the distinctions between song writing and composing, and if it is true what is said about Mozart, then he is the greatest of all time.
[Bob Dylan plagerized, and I think both Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen are more gifted.]
Some others who I think are worth mentioning:
Bob Seagar writes some brilliant drinking tunes
Dickey Betts, from "Revival" to "Beyond the Pale"
Bob Marley is a true musical prophet
Wynton Marsalis, All Rise...
Miles Davis was so eclectic
Curtis Mayfield, "People Get Ready"
Bachman/Cummings--The Guess Who
Peter Gabriel, Jackson Brown, David Byrne and Talking Heads, J.R. Robertson of the Band, Lonnie Mack--maybe he should be noted more for his inspiring playing, Gil Evans, L. Bernstein...

Jul 26 @ 8:33PM
All the above,,and the little known Willis Allen Ramsey

Jul 26 @ 9:03PM
Dan Foglebird,Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash (probably my favorite), Bob Seger, Tracy Chapman,John Lennon,Elton John, way to many ........ and some of them probably were not the writers, more apt just to be the singers........... wonderful blog ..

Jul 26 @ 9:22PM
Damn! Me being an 80's music fan I was hoping to see a little more 80's artists on here.

Jul 26 @ 9:43PM
I've got Harry Chapin in my car's CD player right now. I love his 'stories'. Even my nephew, who is 12, sings right along to 'Cat's in the Cradle' and the 'Banana' song. In fact if my nephew is in the car with me he keeps hitting the buttons to only listen to those two songs!

Jul 26 @ 10:09PM
I agree on Dan Fogelberg; great stuff.

Here's mine:

John Fogerty

Marilyn Manson

John Lennon

So hard to whittle it down to 3; I dig Fogelberg, Lennon, Hetfield, Vai, Ozzy, Dylan, Bon Jovi, Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth, Edsel Dope...the list goes on for days.

Jul 26 @ 11:09PM
Marilyn Manson
mmmmmmmmmyeah.......add that to my list too
