Got a late start but I put in a small garden for my dad and myself. Not much, just some tomatoes and a few peppers. The peppers are for me as nobody else will eat them, lol. They're just cheyenne peppers not "killer" hot but good for cooking.
I did kinda outdo myself with the variety of tomatoes though. Romas and Sweet grape for my salads. My dad loves the bigger varieties of tomatoes for his sandwiches and so I planted a few different types of those for him. Oh, I'll be eating a few of them, too . I did find an interesting tomatoe that I'm interested in trying. It's a Russian variety called Black Krill, real dark and plump. It's also a large, sweet tomatoe that is supposed to have a bit of a bite to it. I can hardly wait until it comes in.
I got a late start thru my own selfishness and had to forgo the seedlings to larger more developed plants, but that's ok. They will come in just fine. As some of you may know, my mom passed a couple of years ago now. She always tended her small garden behind the garage with the love and tenderness that only she could bestow. This small space has been neglected for these last two years now that she is gone. So it had become overgrown with weeds and detritus. As I began to clean out the weeds and overturn the soil I noticed that the earth there was as soft and dark as loam. Rich with the precious nutrients that the plants would need to grow. Nothing had been grown there for the two years, but weeds.
Well now there are tomatoes and peppers there again, all staked out and some already have buds of fruit on them. I did put one bag of top soil on them at dad's insistance - I think he really wants them to come in, lol.
