Two weeks ago I was in Katy, TX visiting my sister, my brother-in-law, and two little adorable nephews. We didn't really do much, but I had a great time just playing with the kids and hanging out.
One morning I accompanied my sister to my oldest nephew's preschool. When we arrived, there were probably 25 to 30 vehicles in the parking lot belonging to other parents. Every last one of those vehicles was an SUV. Not a minivan or car in the lot.
That was an odd time for culture shock to set in. I guess that's why they call it 'shock.' The ridiculous conformity in an otherwise normal (to me) setting was quite surreal.
If you have a similar anecdote, I would certainly enjoy the telling. Let me know I'm not alone in my silly observations.

round here the fad is taking your dog everywhere with you...sitting at a light, you glance over...and their is fido in the front seat, most likely wearing a bandana...dont get me wrong, i love our furry friends...but i dont feel a need to have one in the car with me (although i did used to take him to visit "grandma")...

I kind of went through culture shock when moving here from out west. Pretty much, it seemed, that on one out there smoked in the 90's. Here, it was like everyone did. When I moved here, smoking was allowed in the malls and on school property. If 4 cars were stopped at a light, all of the drivers except me (it seemed) would have a cigarette hanging out of their mouth.
