I found out tonight that a man I know died either late last night or early this morning. His girlfriend went to wake him up and he didn't wake up. He was gone.

Why? Because of taking zanax and drinking alcohol. Not a good combo. I don't do drugs. Unless they are prescribed to me.

Do people not understand what drugs do to you? And mix them with alcohol. Not good.

I have seen friends messed up on zanax, slurring their words, nodding off. I thought why would you want to do something like that to yourself?

So now his girlfriend has to live with the nightmare.

This is on my mind since I heard the news.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. It's a shame he didn't realize the dangers of combining such a potent benzodiazepine and alcohol. I hope his girlfiend has plenty of support at such a difficult time.

I just don't get it? I grew up around drugs. Well they were around. I was never one to try them. Don't get me wrong I did smoke pot. But that was the hardest drug I ever did.

I am still having a hard time believing all of this.

Damn, I'm sorry for your loss. I used to be a BAD drug addict, I have been in recovery for 8 months now though. Thing is, when you are wrapped up in the grips of addiction, nothing else matters and we make decisions that could end up killing us. I almost died last year, my friends got me to the hospital just in time. My heart had stopped. I am grateful today and thats why I dont use drugs or alcohol any more! I'm sorry your friend didnt get the chance to find a better way. Keep your head up and pray for him.

I am glad you are on your way to recovery. Keep up the good work.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Not good. Mixing Alcohol and Xanax? A sure fire way to end up dead!! Anybody remember Karen Ann Quinlan? She was brain dead for years on a vent. Family went to the Supreme Court to get the right to pull the plug. She mixed Vodka and Seconal. The put the warning label pn the side of the bottle for a reason!!! Never mix anti-depressants or sedatives and alcohol!! You can fry! I have seen it numerous times as a nurse!

My mom and my sister were on Zanax...Prescribed for panic attacks though...They never had the problem of nodding off on it...I have been on Ativan in the past for my panic attacks...I never nodded off...I also did not drink with it...My sister is now on a different one since Zanax stopped working...This one I worry about with her on top of all of the other meds her doctor has her on..It is called Klonopin...It helps her though and she only takes it as her doctor says...Sorry for your loss but not all people who use these kinds of drugs are not abusers....They may make a mistake with drinking on them or overdose but not all abuse this as these are mainly prescribed for panic and anxiety disorders....Did he happen to have that?

It's far too easy to get anti-depressant drugs.. all you have to do is tell the doc you feel low.. and boom there they are.

Also be aware of prescription pain killers.. a young lady I used to know had just had a baby, during the labor she cracked a rib.. they gave her pain killers.. she had a shot of vodka one night and forgot she had taken the pain killer already.. took some more.. she and her baby died.

Tammy, I hope you're having a better day today with this. Hang in there. Shawn

I think many drugs are a little bit like automobiles - many people can safely use them and benefit from them but when used irresponsibly they can cause great harm.....
