I was gonna post a reply to Bentan's blog about validation but, it was too long and didn't validate me enough. So, I thought I'd expand on what he said....in my terms, of course.
I totally understand what he was saying about posting comments. It's our own little slice of individuality on the WWW. And, to a LOT of folks, it's their only voice in the public eye. They find it their easiest route to be noticed or, to make an impact on the general public.
And, there's nothing wrong with that! I've done it myself over the years AND will in the years to come, being where I live now. Is it as gratifying as putting yourself out in the public eye? It can be, depending on where you live and situation. It all depends on the individual person, of course.
I spend too much time on the internet due to circumstance. Before we moved, we lived in MY hometown. We had a house that we owned. Nothing special, poor part of town, etc.,. I had a business that I started by borrowing a truck and buying a $40 ladder. Made enough from that job to get business cards printed and get references.
The more people I got to know, the better the business became. A couple of years later, I was either bidding a job or sucking up to "money" people. Thus causing a rift in our marriage........blah, blah, etc.,. So, she came back to her hometown. Life with mom and all. And, I went on the road.
That's when I went into cable tv. I'd done linework before and understood the concept. Well, FUCK the work! I went into making field drafts of blueprints. All by my lonesome......out of state......buying people that'd hire me. THAT'S when I got into the internet! It was about '97 or so.
I found a coupla sites that hooked me up WELL! And, I was making some serious money and picking my jobs within a year. While on the road, I took my PC. Yahoo & MSN was FREE and had user created rooms. So, I could go anywhere in the US and run a personnal, in a chat room, for free!!!
I quit the bar scene! I quit the meeting people off of the street and creating lines of BS to catch their attention. Shit! If I could get $$$$$$ contracts online, meeting a woman couldn't be much differant! And, it wasn''t.........THEN! But, that was a very short phase.
As of now? I'm living in bumfuck, have very little interaction with the public, have shit for a business and am wishing for times gone by. The fuckers got us hooked and pulled the rug out from under us! Cable tv has been bought by the phone companies..........which invest in buying systems instead of upgrading what they own already.
Point of this? I'm back to where I was10 years ago! If I wanna make it happen, I gotta get off my ass and put myself out there. IN the public, being REAL. I check my local search and find crap. BUT, you KNOW they're out there. NOTHING beats face to face interaction! Wheither it be for sex or money. Makes NO differance in the end.
The internet is great for finding information. I'll give ya that. But, it's not so easy pointing and clicking when it comes to personality. S, don't be disappointed when their pics are from 10 years ago. Or, when they email you with a well-thought out, and edited, email of who they want to be.
Want to meet somebody for real? Ask them an embarrassing question on the spot, when you can see them squirming. Just my take on it.
Best of luck to you all!

the keyboard can never give you the eye contact nor body language that is necessary to actually read a person..........however is good for making a large number of contacts quickly and then you can start cutting so to speak.......i agree with you........the internet will never replace face to face nor should it.........

I spend a lot of time in front of one sort of computer screen or another every day. However, I'm also getting out of the house whenever the opportunity appears so I don't feel too bad. For me the best thing about the net is being able to have a conversation with someone three time-zones away. Yeah, you may not meet in person but you've got a friend with a different worldview. There's also something about the impersonality that makes it easier to communicate.

Uh oh, gotta go do the air guitar thing! 'Mr. Brownstone' by Guns and Roses just came on!!!
