have discovered that working for Virgin Mobile makes for an interesting commentary on the educational system of America. Let me put it this way, out of 10 cell phone activations, it is almost guaranteed that at least 4 or 5 people will not know what the pound sign is. This leads too the question, how can we let these people just slip through the cracks? I am reminded of a conversation I had with a co worker who told me that he did not want to have too pay for a single mother's child care just so she could go through college. An interesting thought:

You give someone a fish, and feed them for a day. Teach them to fish and they will be fed for a lifetime. What if you take away their fishing pole? What then? What is the purpose of offering them instruction if they have no way of learning anyway? With cuts in educational spending, hikes in tuition rates, and the federal government basically saying "fend for yourself," What other option is that single mother going to have then to beg people to give her fish?

Now, the answer is not too just throw money at the problem. Yes, to close the gap between the rich and the poor via education will require money, but it will require a more efficient method of spending that money so that with each dollar given, results can be seen.

As for right now though...Well, so much for "no child left behind." Now excuse me, I have to figure out how I'm gonna get a fishing pole.

actually there are a lot of schools that offer day-care for their students, and there are a lot of federal and state grants out there, not to mention private scholarships, to help people in just such a situation. It still won't be easy, but things that are worthwhile rarely are. I agree that education is fundamental to having a healthy society/economy, the problem i see is paying teachers enought that more ppl will do it and getting students to actually CARE.
